Memorial Day Weekend at Mammoth
Arriving at the mountain... it was almost empty! Did people forget Memorial Day weekend ran through today? We practically had the mountain to ourselves-- woohoo!!!!
Blue skies, a bit warmer than the previous two days, no wind, and no crowds? That means it's time to run top-to-bottom laps on the gondola... Cornice to Main Lodge til your legs give out!!!!
Ok, not quite. People eventually did start showing up, but the crowd was maybe 1/3rd the normal size before we gave up on the top to bottom runs and instead just did the top down to Chair 23 (halfway down) instead, 'cause Chair 23 had no line whatsoever. Oh no, the misery! ;-)
9 runs down Cornice, one run down Scotty's (ice-fest at the top traverse still), about half were top to bottom. Not too bad. Matt and I were going much slower than Mike, who topped out at 40-45mph repeatedly and I think hit 50mph on the very last run of the day. Pretty awesome. Plus we pushed hard enough that by lunch (aka time to head back to LA), our legs were pretty shot...
Upon leaving Mammoth, we hit Schat's in Bishop on the way out. The sandwich line was slow as usual, but they had a stack of premade ones, so we bought up a buttload of bread and sweets and nom nom nom'ed. Rest of the drive went pretty smoothly-- we avoided running the gas gauge down to worrying levels this time-- although let's just say after three hard days of skiing, getting out of the car when we got back to LA involved a lot of being stiff.
t'was fun. Supposedly the best Memorial Day weekend conditions in 45 years. We'll take it! June anyone? *grins*
Wrapped up the night with dinner at Jeff and Joycelyn's, since we'd missed their housewarming party the day before. Fun to catch up with them, although the night ended early due to exhaustion...
