Dubai and Doha
Up early, LAX-IAD via a fairly decent (by domestic carrier standards) United Boeing 757-300, hang out in DC for a bit, then off to DXB. Essentially, a full day in airplanes leading to an afternoon arrival in Dubai the next day.
Checked into the hotel, enjoyed the view, then headed off to Dubai Marina, where the drive gives further scale to just how big Dubai is going to be-- it's a hefty 20km/12 miles (!), which shows Dubai is serious about making this one big city in the future.
Surprisingly humid due to the proximity to the water, tons more tall buildings, and a very modern stroll through the Marina Walk and into the Dubai Marina Mall at the end. Conservative and modern co-exist, with far, far more aggressive takes on modern than one might have expected to see. New and modern to ultramodern seems to be the mark. And yes, hot. Peak of 100F and it's not even the hot season, lows in the 70s.
