Greenland
Having never been to Greenland, United Airlines' inaugural flight from Newark, New Jersey (EWR) to Nuuk, Greenland (GOH) was a very unexpected opportunity to go-- and one that was definitely too convenient to pass up.
Since I'd been curious about Greenland for so long, decided to take a whole week off and go. Exploring there was actually a bit more difficult than I initially appreciated, but definitely made do; did not get quite as far afield as I was hoping, but that's okay. And managed to avoid any serious weather delays, which are apparently a very common thing in Greenland.
Day 1: didn't want to risk an overnight connection to Newark, plus knowing that the next day would be a long one, opted for an afternoon flight and overnight layover at Newark International Airport on the way to Greenland.
Day 2: onboard United's inaugural flight from the USA to Greenland, UA 80, EWR-GOH. Nearly the entire flight was excited, and the excitement continued on on arrival.
Day 3: seeing off people on the return inaugural (UA 81, GOH-EWR) before boarding a quick flight up to Ilulissat and exploring Greenland's major tourist town.
Day 4: more quick flights on Air Greenland, this time to Kangerlussuaq and Point 660, one of the few places you can actually walk on a glacier in Greenland without too much difficulty.
Day 5: less-quick flights to Nuuk, but lucked out and the weather didn't delay things too badly.
Day 6: early arrival to the airport for the second departure of United flight 81 back to Newark, then off to Sisimiut.
Day 7: exploring Sisimiut, including an ATV tour and whale watching.
Day 8: more of Greenland's trademark flight delays, but returned to a very busy Nuuk.
Day 9: celebrating National Day in Nuuk.
Day 10: return via EWR.
