June 2025: Day 7: Sisimiut

Breakfast with egg, bacon, sausage, cheese, croissant, watermelon, nuts, and yogurt.

Cafe Ulu is a cute little place right next to the Hotel Soma.

Hotel Sisimiut is the other major hotel here (second largest town/city in Greenland at ~5,000 people).

I think this is looking east/southeast but not sure on the name of the lake.

Shortly after the backcountry ATV drive, everywhere ended up fogged in, including the Arctic Circle Viewpoint.

Burger at the hotel was pretty good, ditto for the fries.

Hotel gyms here all all pretty tiny.

Little tour boat, but a great captain with a welcoming family and an enthusiastic guide.

The wiring rack at the hotel is both exposed to the world and terrible.

Cafe Ulu, right by the Hotel Soma, does a pretty decent breakfast. Did two more tours with Backcountry Greenland today; their ATV tour goes back out past the sled dogs (Hundebyen) for a short loop, and isn't a bad way to see a bit of the bakccountry, while their sea safari has a very friendly local captain and his family out on the water for whale watching.

Nice as those activities were (we had a beautiful pair of humpback whales posing for photos), honestly, the thing to do in Sisimiut appears to be much longer, half-day/full-day hikes, boat cruises, or ATV tours. The abandoned settlement of Assaqutag is apparently recommended, either as a boat cruise or a boat cruise/return hike, which I did not really understand the significance of til I finished my (previously) booked activites in Sisimiut. Oops.

Wandering town was decidedly less interesting than Assaqutaq would have been, but it was still nice to see that Sisimiut is still large enough to have its own series of neighborhoods and even a little bus system.
