Greenland
As the day Greenland gained self-government in 2009, National Day a huge deal in the capital. Found a big celebration forming in one of the town squares, complete with DJ, bounce house, and a few food stalls. Had both a reindeer sausage and a musk ox sausage that were excellent, then walked around some more to the Nuuuk Kuatuaq (Cultural Center), where they were apparently setting up for speeches and more celebrations later in the day. They even had a few street vendors setup selling local Greenlandic snacks (more ammassat anyone?).
Explored eastern and southern Nuuk on my afternoon run, which was pleasantly sunny but still a bit chilly. There was an expensive superyacht docked in addition to the usual assortment of boats, saw some newer and rather colorful apartment buildings at the south end of town, and suddenly it was time for dinner.
Got smart and made a reservation the night before at A Hereford Beefstouw, the other restaurant at the top of the Hotel Hans Egede. In addition to beef, they do reindeer and musk ox-- went for the latter, cooked medium-rare, which was a bit tougher than expected (maybe get medium or medium-well next time?). As opposed to the night before, they never actually filled up, which was a bit of a surprise. The salad bar did have a few fresh vegetables, but not too many, given how difficult and expensive it is to source them this far north. The loaded baked potato was a bit of an extravagance, but for a final meal in Greenland, why not?
Did one last walk around Nuuk after dinner, taking advantage of the light and a different lens to find some different perspectives; was pleasantly surprised given I had done a very similar walk earlier in the day.
