Currently playing: KDL - 103.1

Currently playing: KDL - 103.1 FM Los Angeles
SoCal-SERCA Streets of Willow Springs #4 pics are up.

It's been a long week, and while it was great, I'm glad it's over. 4 hours of sleep, then 3 midterms tried to kill me... slept for another 4 hours, then hit up Willow Springs all day... came back to no clean clothes that night, so I spent 3 hours doing laundry... crawled under my car a few times to try (repeatedly unsuccessfully) to fix that annoying rattle and change the oil... and now the week is over!

Love the station, love the music. I am trying to find out the name of a song you guys play all the time that you never announce. When the song is playing the artist pauses sometimes and says, "What a beautiful day". Is that the name of the song or is it something else. I am having a lot of trouble finding it. Thank You.

Hey guys.. I've got a song request.. There is a song that just has like this little german baby saying something every now and then, and the rest of it is just this awesome beat.. do you know the title or artist? Let me know if you get the chance! thanks a mil!! email: jcargill@csulb.edu
take care ladies and gents

Posted by: James at December 19, 2003 04:24 PM

James' comment reminded me of a song I also want to ID... I don't know if we are speaking of the same song, but the one I have in mind has a baby saying "La" every so often. The beat sounds almost like an Arabic/Indian style. "Come to me" and "and touch me baby" are among the lyrics. It also sounds like some Spanish lyrics are in the song... but I'm not too sure about that. I'd appreciate any help! email: flashatrcc@hotmail.com Thanks!

Is KDL103.1 over? What happened to the station?

Posted by: Milan at December 22, 2003 11:21 PM

I think KDL is part of a dallas based station also called KDLparty. I found a song finder page @ 'http://songfinder.mypuppet.net/songlist.php', it should help most of you with your questions. As for james' with the baby-beat question, i think its 'Omnibus', or at least thats the one i wanted to find. Its got a young child singing "Ikfa-Omnibus" every once in a while.

Posted by: miba4 at December 25, 2003 11:54 AM

The artist and song name are "Despina Vandi - Gia" for the baby and its greece. she says "let me be your genie"

Posted by: Oracio at December 26, 2003 01:21 PM

The other one with the girl saying "Embrace Me" is "Motorcycle - as the world turns"

Posted by: Oracio at December 26, 2003 01:40 PM

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is missing KLD 103.1 in Newport / LA California. I've been confused about their absence in the past few days. The replacement music is CRAP - it sucks. Today, I heard a really fast station ID where some guy quickly says "Independent Radio", then they go back to sucky music.

I'm guessing that either they went on Christmas vacation and left a tape playing or someone hijacked the frequency and can't be traced. Sounds like a conspiracy theory, but a week before Christmas there were several dropouts where the signal was lost for 5 to 10 minutes, then suddenly came back.

Wierd stuff ... I want the station back!

Posted by: SteveO at December 26, 2003 11:08 PM

Man, i am so glad i wasn't the only one, for a minute there, i was going crazy. Independent radio??? What kind of shit is that? KDL was the representatives of us Ravers and trancers. I mean they were the only station that represented the electronica/dance genre. I want the KDL PARTY STATION back. There is a reason why the PARTY is over, and i want a letgitimate answer. But why replace good music with that crappy "INDEPENDENT RADIO CRAP"? laters........Over-N-out

Posted by: StriderX59 at December 26, 2003 11:26 PM

While I listened to KDL, I won't miss it & here's why: the only golden moment 103.1 really had was the shining star that was Swedish Eagle's Groove Radio. I knew KDL wasn't going to make it past 2003 - a weak frequency, a narrow & lackluster playlist, a ridiculous morning show, and a loss of sponsorship as time went on. Figures that Clear Channel bought it, but they've got the $$$, and they can call the shots. However, a nice xmas gift to LA/OC listeners would have been to 1) dump KDL, and 2) surprise us all by bringing back 'Groove'. Yep, I still hold out hope for our So Cal airwaves....

Posted by: Liz at December 27, 2003 02:52 AM

Yup yup, Indie 103.1, I've flipped back to it over the past few days and notticed that bullshit.... I keep going back hoping my station will be back on but Nope. Indie 103.1 is still on. This has happened to me twice now where I really got into a station then it just Vanished..... Damn it...

Hello fellow friends!

Posted by: Jake Handers at December 28, 2003 03:37 PM

I finally found some info on what happened to kdl. It was bought out and changed into a rock station. You can find all the details at http://franklinavenue.blogspot.com/ .There are alot of listings but look for it under the DEC. 17, 2003 (Wednesday) listing. I was hoping that they would come back but it looks like they are gone for good :(

Posted by: zoey at December 28, 2003 10:17 PM

In response to Liz's comment, I completely agree but I was holding out hope. And as far as sponsorship goes, does anyone remember when the station first went on the air? They didn't seem to have any sponsors at all at that point. No commercials, no DJ, no morning show. Just music 24 hours a day, and the playlist was better. Hmmm, too good to be true I guess. I also remember Groove (at the same frequency, no less) - Bring It Back!!

Posted by: Colleen at December 29, 2003 09:12 AM

Dance music doesn't make it in L.A. radio--KDL, Groove, Marz--they never last. Is the dance/electronica community too into downloading their music that they don't dial in? I wish I knew the reason. We already have enough rock, rap & talk radio in this town (don't get me wrong, I listen to rock too)--but we need dance. Hell, even Clear Channel has had success with Disco Saturday night, so you'd think they get a clue.

Posted by: Scott at December 29, 2003 11:32 AM

Here what happen to KDL...I have to say I really hate Clear Channel and I for one will never listen to that Star or Kiss FM ever again. No that I listen to it much before but on occations I would listen to a song or two. Screw Clear Chanell

Last Dance
Call Clear Channel "The Grinch Who Stole Dance Radio." As confirmed by Radio & Records and LARadio.com, the plug will be pulled Dec. 21 on short-lived L.A. dance outlet 103.1 KDL , known as "The New Party Station."

Clear Channel has entered a joint sales agreement with station owner Entravision, which means the behemoth won't own the 103.1 frequency -- but will more or less determine its fate from the manner that matters the most, its sales.

But as part of the terms of the arrangement, Clear Channel wanted -- and got-- Entravision to switch the format from a dance one (which chipped away at CC's KIIS-FM) to a rock format that might hurt Infinity's KROQ.

To that end, Mike Halloran -- briefly at old KROQ rival Y107 -- is programming the new rock outfit.

It's been a weird swirl of format changes through the years at 103.1. The station in the 1990s went from dance/alternative "MARS-FM" to jazz "JAZZ-FM" to adult contemporary "CD 103.1" to dance "Groove Radio."

Then Clear Channel bought the frequency and turned it into the Adult Album Alternative format "Channel 103.1." But when the corporate behemoth had to sell off a station, due to a market cap, Entravision bought 103.1 and turned it into Spanish-lingo "Super Estrella."

Then the company made an unheard of move: Last January, Entravision (which mostly operates Spanish stations) flipped 103.1 to the English-language dance format "103.1 KDL." It was a bizarre turn of events, catching many (particularly those who still missed the dance format "Groove Radio" on 103.1) by surprise.

Unfortunately, the format wasn't well executed. And like history repeating itself, Clear Channel swooped in for the second time and killed the dance format in favor of a rock-leaning one.

Why the 103.1 turmoil? It's frankly a weak signal. It barely stretches beyond the west side (a simulcast also hits portions of Orange County). Which is why the station, no matter what format, barely registers in the Arbitrons. That's enabled the frequency's myriad of owners to gamble with unique formats... but so far all of those gambles have failed.

Meanwhile, I doubt you'll see a dance station in L.A. again anytime soon.

Posted by: Pablo Ramirez at December 29, 2003 01:12 PM

I'll miss KDL. My favorite song was "Murder on the Dancefloor". I got horny all the time when it came on.

Posted by: Dong at December 29, 2003 03:26 PM

All I have to say is WORD!
This travisty sucks. LA has lost its only bastian of dance music.

And to add insult to injury good ole clear channel has added Oakenfold & Dirty Vagus in between the Brittney & Justin on The KISS.

Talk about scared! KDL must have been pullin alot of listenters to make that kind poop in clear channels rice bowl.

If anyone wants more info on what the hell happened here's a good Blog ---"Last Dance" Blog on »www.franklinavenue.blogspot.com/

Well for those you that remember Groove Radio 103.1 FM, if Sweedish Egil could only bring it back to the L.A. airwaves that would be great! But as we know that will not happend. Grooveradio can be found at www.grooveradio.com, If someone ever wins the damn lotto, shell out some funds and fricken buy a nice radio station with a super antenna that sends airwaves all the way to the Inland Empire and OC, and lets get some electronica back on the air!!!
Clear Channel can bite me!!! Thanks KDL for trying at least!

I'm devastated!!! 103.1 was my station! I still remember the old Mars, with Big Ron and the Swedish Eagle! Then Groove radio, then KDL. I LOVED KDL - I AM SO BUMMED OUT!!! There are no other good dance music stations in L.A. KISS is too R&B for my taste, Star is too Sarah McGlaughlin-slash-grunge rock-eighties new wave, and nothing else is even close. Come on LA is the #1 radio market in the country. If LA can't support dance radio, that's really sad. Next time get a decent frequency that actually gets reception!!!

Posted by: Mike at January 5, 2004 04:34 PM

Clear Channel is EVIL!!! They killed KDL, to make everyone listen to that old (EMBALMED) Rick Dees! He's like 80 years old!!! I hate them, they suck!!! KIIS bites!

Clear Channel is EVIL!!! They killed KDL so we'd have to listen to elderly Rick D'z. Isn't he about 90? They destroyed a great station!!! And all because it threatened their lame one! This is an outrage! Dance music lovers unite! Rise up! Fight the power! Fight bland, formatted, corporate radio!!!

What happened to KDL 103.1 ? How come there is another station playing there now? Did they move or something?

Posted by: Vanessa at January 6, 2004 12:40 PM

103.1 was really good in the beginning, somewhere around March, April 03, they played alot of dance hits that were very euro and could not be heard on other radio stations. Somewhere around July they started to become more mainstream, (could have been a corporate decision). We should get them to publish a list of songs they used to play, e.g. by Moony, Milky, and they should tell us where to get these tracks from.

Posted by: Harry M at January 6, 2004 05:09 PM

Bring Kdl back! It was the only station my son and I could agree on. We both really loved it. I think I'm done listening to the radio.

Posted by: Susan at January 6, 2004 11:21 PM

Yea, I agree to all comments. Bring KDL back. This is the only Dance station we have in LA. Others are good for oldies. Too much Hip stations already. Trance? Electronica? Come Back! Been blasting my car audio with Trance music when stuck in traffic to show my Support to KDL!!!!

Posted by: Gary at January 7, 2004 06:06 PM

Hey, I agree with everyone in regards to wanting a dance station in LA. Like the saying goes "the pen in mightier than the sword". Anyway, anyone interested in getting some type of petition out to these Clear Channel Hub Bubs to get our point across. Does LA really need another KROQ/KLOS type of station? I think not. With techonology we can get the word out and get an e-mail list of interested folks and their comments. I'll walk the petition down myself, if I have to. Anyone interested, please e-mail me. Thanks for your time.

Rico Banana and the rest of the crew rocked!! What the hell is going on it's insane driving in the morning now it's so fucking boring now! Bring back our station!!!!

Posted by: Lorraine at January 9, 2004 08:16 AM

Fuck KDL. Whilst they were good at the beginning,
they failed in really embracing the dance scene and opted more to go mainstream. True, it was the only dance station in L.A., and me, a dance music fan, should be behind them. In a way I am but they were no MARS o no GROOVE RADIO. They were ok and they will not be missed as much as I miss MARS & GROOVE.

Now, the dance scene is not completely dead, there's still Metropolis at KCRW and Chocolate City. I guess I'd have to get my fix from them

Posted by: Humberto at January 9, 2004 09:59 PM

KDL was cool---except that AWFUL rico banana show! I was sooo glad when they moved him to mornings and i could spend my afternoon drive home without being bothered by him. i love dance music, i even hosted a dance show on the radio back in the day in vegas, but KDL's playlist was weak. it was very repitious. i agree with many of you...grooveradio was much better, marrs was tons better. such is life. truth be told, even CD103 was better. i will miss it though...but was with the nonstop horrible christmas music during the transition?? yikes.

As a former CC employee who hated the Clear Channel's AAA (Adult Album Alternative) format, I was shocked to hear what I consider cool music-- meaning that I own these CDs and never ever thought a mainstream station would ever run these songs-- playing on a station like 103.1, which has a weak signal (that means certain death in radio, no matter what the format is).

The sad truth is that they are trying out a new "Active Rock" format to compete with KROQ, which is owned by Infinity. The new PD at 103.1 used to work for Y-107, which also had a weak signal and ended up being Spanish Rock after a while.

According to industry sources, the entire staff at KDL was fired and automation was installed BEFORE Christmas-- meaning that no one noticed the change until they stopped playing trance and started playing Xmas music. However, CC cannot legally own too many stations in the L.A. market (they practically own L.A.) so they are going through Entravision Communications.

Sounds to me (and this is just a theory) that Entravision had to make a deal with the devil (CC) in order to survive. That means they were losing money. And if they were losing money, what does that say about the ad revenue from ravers and dance-music lovers? It says that they won't support the station that they love with their business.

Now, I'd like to know-- were the station's ratings low? Were they scraping to get advertisers on the air? Because if they were really doing fine financially, there would've been no way for CC to get their hands on it.

If it's a case of the station losing money, then this might be the last time that L.A. gets a dance station that doesn't suck, only to have it fall to the wayside.

i moved out here in April of last year and was totally digging 103.1. My 6 yr.old daughter would even be in the back seat singing "shiny disco balls!"...

The music was awsome and i listened to it day and night. This sucks because i don't even know where to find those songs to listen to them in my car. if anyone knows where to purchase music from that station please e-mail me.

I have to say that I really enjoy the new format that Independent Radio 103.1 is playing now. What genre of music do you call it? The band Jett is the best, I hope to hear more of their songs played in the future.

Posted by: Stephani at January 20, 2004 01:32 PM

So, one night I was channel surfing on my way home from work and I came accross a station playing a Sophie Ellis-Bextor song. I was blown away, this can't be true. A station playing some good music!

Well, it was too good to be true. Everytime I turned KDL on they were playing the same damn song. I swear they played the same shit over and over. It was like they bought the rights for about 10 songs and thats all they were allowed to play. I never did hear Sophie Ellis-Bextor again. I once heard them play a BT song once. They played the early 90s crap over and over.

Plus, the morning show was so terrible. It had a chick telling a gay guy to shutup every 5 seconds. It was the worst when she would try to sing stuff. I am sorry to see a station go that had the potential of being pretty good. But I am not surprised to see it get canceled due to the piss poor quality of the station, music selection, and DJs.

Posted by: John Doe at January 20, 2004 10:21 PM

Conspiracy Theory

The reason KDL went off the air is because all the other radio stations were getting pissed that they were losing their audience to a station that had been around a little over a year. Most people don’t realize that a majority of the “popular” stations are all affiliated with one another (basically, the same corporation owns them). With fewer listeners, there are less advertisers, and advertisers are what make the radio stations go round’& round’. I can say for myself, that when KDL was going strong, I NEVER EVER changed the station, and I didn't have to look for “good” songs. I even stopped listening to Howard Stern in the morning, not to listen to Ricco Banana but to tune in to the music. This cancellation of the station is not due to poor numbers, we’ve seen how Orange County has reacted to the loss of its station, it has to do with a conspiracy among the other stations to force KDL to give back what was rightfully theirs. Their audience. How else can you explain the poor decision to remove a popular station that was growing. Obviously, KDL was ahead of its time. Maybe it should have started slow, with very few listeners so that all these other stations would not have felt threatened by popular dance music. Now, I’m back to surfing through all 12 presets to find 1 good song, whereas with KDL, I wouldn’t bother changing the station because you always new that a good song was next.

Posted by: Hydroponic at January 22, 2004 02:50 AM

KDL was the only station I could listen to without hearing the same bubblegum pop punk songs on other stations such as kiis. I thought this station would be the one that would outlast all of the previous formats on that frequency. Finally we had a staion that played our favorite trance and party music. I think a petition would be an awesome idea to show these coorporate ass holes what a big following KDL had. I miss you Banana!

Posted by: Michelle at January 22, 2004 10:51 AM

Every time we dance/techno fans lose a station, it is over money. We all need to suck it up and fork over the $$ for either Sirius or XM radio, both of which have excellent dance stations.

Sirius actually plays commercial-free 24/7 with none other than legendary MARS-FM 103.1 Music Director Swedish Egil AND Program Director Freddy Snakeskin. Sirius Stream 63 (Planet Dance) is the modern-day reincarnation of MARS-FM/Groove Radio, and they actually play original MARS-FM songs now & then, not to mention NEW, WEEKLY Groove Radio International shows with Egil!!
Best of all, no more weak signal at 103.1...try crystal clear cross country!! Worth every penny for me, even with an ugly antenna on my new car. I actually got tired of KDL's limited-budget repetition, even though most of the songs were really good initially. Also, there is a KDL clone (with much more variey) at Sirius, stream 66.

As you can guess by my email address (marsfm@aol.com), I still think MARS-FM was the greatest music station in the history of LA/OC, and if anyone out there has any old off-the-air tapes from MARS-FM (May 1991 to Aug 1992), please let me know. I have about 20 original airchecks now, and would love to trade for more!!

Posted by: Chuck at January 22, 2004 11:23 PM

I've been reading all of the posts on this group and I've got to tell you this station is playing better music than I've heard in L.A. since I moved here. They are playing old Smiths, Cure, Pixies, and Ramones as well as some Rancid, Peaches and others in the mix. What the hell more could you ask for? Maybe its not playing all the dance hits, but at least its not replaying Blink 182 or some other faux-punk crap every 5 minutes.

Death to the Pixies!

While I agree with some of the criticism, KDL was the only station that provided "dance" music 24/7. I will miss it, but I am more concerned about the ever increasing power of Clear Channel and it's broadcast brethren. Too much control in the power of too few is never, ever good.

As the example of KDL proves, it's always about money and protecting the evil empire. CLEAR CHANNEL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: skywalker1 at January 27, 2004 12:23 PM

this sucks ass i miss kdl rick deez is fucken fag who needs to die i can't believe it, i love party music now i have download kdl music and listen to kiis fm sucks and that song from motorcycle is called "as the rush comes"

Posted by: martha at January 27, 2004 05:36 PM

KISS sucks, bring back KDLs rave stuff, that was my station.

Posted by: R at January 27, 2004 09:39 PM

Such a shame KDL is gone, it had its flaws, but nonetheless remained the only station where real dance/club music could be heard and NOT crap...I mean rap.

Posted by: A at January 28, 2004 08:08 AM

so this is no chance of kdl ever coming back to the los angeles area? if there no chance of it coming back that sucks. im so sick of power, kiss, star and kroq, kdl was more entertaining and yes they played the same format, but u know, it got me hooked on dance music. its a damn shame. back to the same boring music on radio, whoopie, not!!

Posted by: tristin the ups driver at January 30, 2004 04:43 PM

is there anywhere to get the independent radio playlist. there are a shitload of good tunes playing. even a couple of irish sounding ones. but i have no idea who they are by. help me out

Posted by: mike martin at February 2, 2004 08:23 PM

You guys started out great, but now we are finding out you guys only have a very limited amount of music. You play the same songs over and over every day. If you need some more music we'll be happy to kick you down some cd's. really. you got to get some newer music going and get a bigger rotation. If I hear that damn 'follow tha day' or 'jessica simpson' song again i'm gonna come down and whoop some ass. get some damn music.

What a difference a few months makes. Check out the "new" KDL / KDLD Indie 103.1 song list here.

www.geocities.com/flashbackcenter

This 103-1 playlist is much different than KROQ's, and certainly different than "the new party station's". So, all we have on the air now is KCRW, hmmm, it'll do for now but bring back groove!

Hey i was wondering does anyone know what happen to the people in the banana show?

if they moved to other station or what?

let use know ...

Posted by: louie at February 8, 2004 11:27 PM

awww man! this sucks! I miss my station!! The main reason for them being down is KIIS FM, KDL was taking away listeners from them so clear channel (CC) the devil owned company they are made a deal with Entravision (Hispanic radio station company) and as part of the deal they changed the format of the station. The idea for KDL comes from the original KDL in Dallas Texas KDL106.7 http://www.1067kdl.com the DL in KDL stands for Dallas. Anyway the KDLs stations are the only english language stations owned by Entravision and I guess "CC" didnt like it when their baby kiss FM started to loose their listeners to DKL and made a move to take them out. KDLs song list was kindda old but I still loved them! now theres a lot better dance music on satalite radio, just keep this in mind when you go to satalite...theres 2 main companies offering the service XM $10.00 (Some stations play commercials) and then theres Sirus which is $13.00 I think (commercial free) So now heres the twist! Clear Channel owns a stake in XM radio....and guess what?...WE HATE THESE GUYS SO DONT GET SERVICE FROM XM =)
Now if you want KDLs song list you can go here =) http://nike.cecs.csulb.edu/~bdinh/kdl.php

Ohhh one other thing, if you go to KDLs Dallas website you can find that station's song list which is pretty much the same format as KDL 103.1

Heres entravision website http://www.entravision.com here you will find all the info you need to call, write or email them and tell them to bring KDL back!

Info for KDL's office (well now Indie 103.1)
5700 Wilshire Blvd #250
Los Angeles, CA 90036
Tel: 323-900-6300
Fax: 323-900-6400
the name of the GM is: Karl Meyer you can call him and tell him to tell his bosses at Entravision to change the format back to dance music.

Heres the link to the webpage that shows all the radio stations owned by Entravision. http://www.entravision.com/template.cfm?page=media&subpage=radioAll if you notice only Dalls KDL and "Indie 103.1" (Formerly known as KDL) are the company's only 2 english stations. They were doing good I dont know why they gave into Clear Channel. CLEAR CHANNEL CAN BITE ME!!

COME ON PEOPLE, LETS START A REVOLUTION HERE!!!

Posted by: Marco at February 9, 2004 01:30 AM

ohhh another thing....Clear channel has a 2 year lease with Entravision on 103.1 so maybe in 2 years if they receive enough hate mail from us they might bring back KDL or maybe Entravision will take one of its LA Spanish stations that is not doing well ratings wise and change the format to dance =) HEHE I WISH!!! Well the leat I can do is thank ENtravision for bringing back some dance music back to LA even if it was only for a little while. PS....KDLs last song before it went off air was an old techno hit "James brown is dead"

Posted by: Marco at February 9, 2004 01:47 AM

BastaRds! i loved the party station. it got me going whenever i was driving somewhere. this whole time i was wondering about what ever happened to that station, i was hoping that they had just gone to a different station, but dang. that suKs ASS! i cant believe they're gone.

Once again I am dissapointed when I learned that another Dance Station was pulled from Right under our noses (OUR KDL). We are stuck with the same BORING radio stations. Praise the Lord that Rick Dees was kicked out of the L.A. radio station line up. Though, it still does not offer a relife to the missing void in our preset bottons in our cars as some of us commute over a hour. No entertaing music. All the stations Los Angeles has to offer and no Dance music. Has the younger generation been forgotten while trying to make a buck with music played on station such as KLOS, KIIS, KOST, KSTAR, KPWR, and so on and so forth. This is that crap we have to put up with. Instead of Music that makes you feel great as you drive into our crappy jobs. There has to be an answer. Are we not in a diffrent era????
Somebody Help. I don't have money to buy Satalite radio otherwise I'd take that route.

Oh, Quick note Is Ryan Seacrest that great that he is once again brought in to host the radio?

KDL was not some stupid radio station to me, or my family and friends. It was something so much more.It was entertainment, comedy, inspiration, and just all around therapeutic. It made everything from sitting in hellish traffic to being bored at home or cruising down the street so much more tolirable/worth while.I was not even into dance music before KDL. Now I find myself struggling every day without it.And even if I can replace some of the music.I can't replace banana's playhouse and (CHARLIE) every morning.Every morning I got up I looked forward to turning on KDL.It almost turned traffic into an excuse to kick back in the car and listen to KDL.Or at the very least made it just that much better. I havent ever cared about a station before. But I can now say,we can't just sit back and take it.We need OUR PARTY STATION BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For months I've been trying to figure out what happened to KDL. I kept on checking 103.1 to see if it would come back, but I guess not. I don't know why I didn't look up this page sooner. Anyway, I will miss KDL, even though Banana's playhouse was horrible. My best memory from KDL was when they started playing Despina Vandi by Gia. This song was something I heard in Ibiza, Spain last summer. I'm not gonna find another station in LA that plays stuff I heard in Ibiza! I will miss you KDL and secretly hold out hope that you'll come back someday.

I'm feelin everyone on loosing KDL.. the party station for life!! what the hell happened?!?!? i keep hoping that one day i'll tune in and they'll be playing dance music, but i hightly doubt that since it's now gay indie-rock! DOES ANY BODY KNOW OF ANOTHER DANCE STATION??

Posted by: sar at February 25, 2004 01:32 PM

I just moved here last year and I can't believe that in a big city like LA, there is no good dance music station. I loved KDL until it's demise.

C89.5fm in Seattle plays music like KDL used to. You can listen to them online at http://www.c895fm.com/.

kdl was a great music station! all these other stations say they play rock music but then they play r&b.. hit music, then they play them over and over again until you just get sick of it. whenever, i turned to kdl, there was always something good on. when i moved to the LAX area, that was the only station i listened to. yes, it was like a therapeutic music, but it made me feel good! i didn't have to change my mood cause a different kind of song from a different genre is coming. the only kind of station that didn't change their tone like kdl is the country station 9.31. i'm tired of radio stations saying they play this kind of music and they play other kinds that really have nothing to do with their station-. BRING KDL BACK!!!!!!

Hello Everybody, I thought I was the only one frustrated with the fact that 103.1 KDL has gone bye bye and shitty music is played all day long on 103.1. Only 3 words can summarize my feeligs - "it's fucked up!" I really liked the station alot; used to remind me of when i was younger and, in addition, something to look forward to since I have no life b/c I'm always busy here at work fixing computers. I'm pretty pissed with those used asswipes at 102.7 kiis and have decided to boycott their station and never listen to that oompa loompa Rick dees. To remediate the situation, now I have to pull up the playlists for 106.7 kdl texas and get copies. Thanks to those assholes at KIIS, now I have to waste my time to get the songs. Damn fuckers >=^\

I loved 103.1 KDL. It was a great station. LA needs a Dance music station. It had a weak playlist but I still loved it. it is a lot better than that mainstream crap. Anyway does anyone know the name of this song/ artist? The lyrics go like this "It's a beautiful day. I love it when it feels this way" I think KDL should be resurrected. I am currently upgrading my computer and playing Halo . Email me djzelda89@yahoo.com if anyone agrees with me or if they know the name of that song.

OK everyone, now is the time to get the massive mail campaign started to get KDL back in LA. Today, I wrote a letter to Entravision outlining the successes of KDL and the still overwhelming support it has for a come back. I encourage you all to do the same! I have posted my letter in an effort to see how many people can cut and paste it and then send it off so that we can bombard Entravision with a resounding statement that says "WE WANT OUR KDL BACK AND WE'RE NOT TAKING NO FOR AN ANSWER"

Dear Entravision:
On December 17, 2003, the Los Angeles radio station KDL 103.1 was shut down in an effort to streamline your company’s holdings backed by corporate pressure from the media powerhouse Clear Channel. This action, while seemingly unfounded, has over the last 3 months proven to be once again nothing more than a bulldog (Clear Channel) clamping its jaws down on an independently small and rapidly growing radio revolution. KDL represented for many the ONLY alternative to standard radio programming found in stations such as KIIS, POWER, STAR, and KROQ, where variety and soul-thumping grooves defined the large and ever growing club culture. In the short time that KDL aired on 103.1 in Los Angeles, an unmistakably passionate audience came to love and tune their radio’s daily to this long over due choice in radio programming. As a committed listener myself, I watched a small independent radio station that began with 24 hour dance music programming, turn into a benchmark for the Los Angeles dance/trance/techno club culture.

More recently, in the last 3 months of its programming, an expanded staff which included a new and very vibrant morning show, a well known list of DJ’s including Tony B., and the unique nighttime show which showcased up and coming DJs, was beginning to stake its claim to a large portion of Los Angeles’ radio listeners. The multiple events sponsored and organized by KDL were all hugely successful, in particular the KDL sleepover, all pointing to the overwhelming and undeniable fact that many Angelinos had finally found a radio station to call home. KDL offered me and many others an escape from bubble-gum pop, annoying alternative and overplayed rap that saturated this market. Support was growing as I am sure revenues were not too far behind, yet programming was suddenly and unexplainably halted in the wake of this success.

My intent and that of many others is to once and for all obtain an answer, a conclusion to this happy chapter in our lives of radio listening now blemished by the abrupt disappearance of our beloved KDL 103.1 to why this station was short lived. Was there statistically not enough support, because I don’t buy that…was there lack of funding, because again, I don’t buy that either…or was it really all of our worst fear that a company like yours, Entravision, could be bullied by the big kid on the block Clear Channel in an effort to regain their listeners that had clearly made the switch to better programming found on KDL? My hope is that this letter will help, as I am sure many others you have received will, to prove to those who need it that there is a GREAT need for a channel such as KDL in the Los Angeles area and that the new replacement, Indie Rock or whatever it’s called, will never reach the heights that KDL did on the listener scale. Clearly the smart business choice would be to listen to those who pay the bills through their support, the listener, and forget about those who oppose a new choice in radio in Los Angeles due to greed, manipulation, and over paid cheesy on air personalities.

Currently, there are a large number of KDL supporters, music lovers, and artists who are committed to dance radio in Los Angeles once again taking over the radio waves and a petition is being drawn. While I know that the listener support and artist support is concrete, visit (http://www.brian1.net/daily/000082.htm) to see for yourself, I urge Entravison to once again become involved in this opportunity to do what your company has been doing for years, fighting for the minority and giving us a voice through music. With your support and commitment to the community and our needs, I know that we can fight the corporate bulldogs that control our lives and the mediocre entertainment we are subjected to.

Hey, Brendon!
Good job man!
You did a fantastic job in writing to Entravision,
and I will also write them a letter tonight.
I looooooooooved KDL, the ONLY radio station I could listen to (except for K-Big that I listen to on occasion). Music in LA, unfortunately, has severely degrated, which to a big extent affects people's mental development, as well. But KDL started to return the concept of "Music" back to normal. It's the ONLY station that did not repeat same stuff over & over again, and that we could listen to and enjoy 24 hours a day.
I hope, I dream about KDL returning.
Let's all wish each otehr luck!!!
Thanks everyone for your support towards KDL.

Hey, dear fellow supporters!
As promised, I wrote a letter to Entravision.

TO... ENTRAVISION
...
Dear Sir or Madam:

I am very saddened to learn that the wonderful KDL radio-station (103.1) is no longer on the air, and has been replaced by “Indie 103.1”.

Whereas, no doubt, the new Indie is liked by quite a few listeners, KDL was much more popular citywide and countywide. The radio-station had wonderful dancing music, great show, а unique style; no wonder the station has gained popularity in no-time. KDL was perhaps the only radio-station that I could listen to the entire day. Finally, being a musician myself, I take music very closely and seriously, and I seriously think that KDL was one of the very few decent radio stations in Los Angeles, and definitely needs to be returned back.

Along with thousands of other listeners, I kindly ask you to please consider returning 103.1 radio station back to the dance style, and bring our dear KDL back. Thank you very much in advance.

Yours truly,
....
name.

OMG! I have been reading all of the posts and just rofl! I remember the first time I heard 103.1, I had to have been like 18-19! The first song I had been TRACKING (and the only record store was Moby Disc-Ahem...yeah...I'm OLD!)was by Prodigy...and the song name was Charlie! AND! I lived in Palmdale! Hello....let's drive 1.15 minutes or so to get into Sherman Oaks to buy the VINYL! ACK! NOT!

Anyhow....I really miss Mars...and the NEW...103.1 that is currently playing god knows what? it's AWFUL! I mean...I love old punk as much as the next person but what the heck are they doing from 7-12? I mean the music is beyond CRAP. I don't think there is a better word for it. AND, I have to wait til almost 2-3 before they finally play something GOOD! I heard them playing a Drain Sth song and NEVER....saying who it is! I mean how do we support our artists if they don't ANNOUNCE!?

So, in the end, I totally agree with you all. I guess the radio pimps have won because KROQ used to be good back in the 80's...but now, they have subjected themselves to "playlists!" and....radio pimps have worked their wonders and took away our "choices" of music and forcing us to listen to their "lists"..."new artist"(which has been around for oh....12 years and they just NOW....found them!). I would love to move to XM or SIRIUS radio but...1. the cost...2. the fee's and 3....i dunno how i feel about a SATELLITE knowing where I am at all times?! Should I be so freaky?

TIA for reading this post as I am VERY annoyed at "commercial radio" and "playlists".

It's too bad that the voice of the KDL from the past can't stand up against corporate america and the broadcast of the future in radio. Just goes to show a person how little they are in this very large world that we live in.

Posted by: mike at May 30, 2004 01:30 AM

Excellent music for the most part as long as you keep that "headbanger throw-up in the microphone shit" out of here. I like this type of music, which is the most current new music around the country (I use to listen to WOXY in Ohio, via internet, which was the best radio broadcast of new music in the country until Ma and Pa sold out and went off the air).

I wish this station didn't have so damn many commercials, but I guess you gotta pay the bills.

I also wish it broadcasted with more power so we could hear it in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Posted by: brad at June 3, 2004 10:52 AM

KDL was good, but POWERTOOLS on power106 with richard humpty vission & swedish egil is dope! They play real underground music and none of that mainstream shit!!!

Posted by: djhazard at June 9, 2004 11:35 AM

Dude, how lame can you be? 103.1 is complete crap! 1st thing they need to do is get rid of that fucking lame Jonesys Jukebox. This guys playlist consists of old-ass bands that nobody has ever heard of and suck baaad. What is "independent" radio? 103.1 is way off.

Posted by: orange at June 11, 2004 01:11 PM

I have yet to even listen to the new station. I had a personal vigil until the station switched over in December. Had a shot of Tequila in remembrance of the station, went to bed. Clear Channel Communication can go to hell for all I care.

Posted by: agent_pineapple at June 27, 2004 11:05 PM

What happened to KDL? When they went off the air 102.7 KIIS FM picked up one of their DJs and also the club "Stock Exchange" in L.A. KIIS then started to play more dance/trance/techno. Did KIIS buy the station?

Posted by: Jen at August 3, 2004 01:43 PM

We need to start doing something about this. We just need to get organized. I miss this radio station so much and it's sad how we are forced to listen to indie.

I miss the morning show with glamor Samor, Curious George and others (sorry didnt want to get the gils name wrong i think its rita i dont remember). Great show. i so miss carmen and charlie. KDL has been THE best station in LA.
It's really sad that it's now gone.
Now, ATTENTION!!!
If anybody wants to listen to KDL-style music online (live streaming radio),
here are a couple of links:
1) http://party931.com
2) http://www.energy98stl.com/listenlive.html

At least, this is a start :)
But I agree with all of you - there is no other station in LA like our dear KDL.
What can we do to make them come back?
I know that Entravision owns 103.1 (not really by Clear Channel).
I also know that KIIS FM sucks!! And the new Indie 103.1 sucks even more!! There's even no comparison :)
So, let's work all together and get our KDL back. Any suggestions?
Alek

Posted by: Alek at September 8, 2004 10:51 AM

The station was pretty good, but they needed to play more electronica and have guest dj segments regularly. It started off good and then just became KIss fm.

Posted by: justine at September 14, 2004 09:02 PM

Yes, Justin, you're right.
They did remind me of KIIS FM towards the end (although still much better!!).
And I hate KIIS FM, it degraded soo badly over the years!

All I want to know is how do you find ouy what song is playing. Another site perhaps? ANYTHING! I'm not completely mental blocked to this station... there a few toons that heppen to spark my interest & it would be nice to know the artist of that particular song. I would appreciate any suggestions?

LET'S FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM TO SELECT THE MUSIC WE LOVE.
Folks, I wrote another letter.
Write to the following address:

Mr. Jeffery Liberman,
President,
ENTRAVISION RADIO
2425 Olympic Boulevard
Suite 6000 West
Santa Monica, CA 90404

You can copy it and paste it and send it to Clear Channel.
But PLEASE - make some changes, so it wouldn't sound like one same "reproduced" letter :-)
HERE IT IS.

Dear Sir or Madam:

Having written to Entravision and Clear Channel twice, and receiving no response in return, I decided to write to you directly about a concern.

I am very saddened to learn that KDL radio-station (103.1) is no longer on the air, and has been replaced by “Indie 103.1”, for almost a year now. I am truly puzzled, and very disappointed, as to why such a wonderful and popular radio station as KDL would be abruptly thrown off the air; the station was so successful and popular.

Whereas, no doubt, the new Indie 103.1 is liked by a number of listeners, KDL was much more popular citywide and countywide. The radio-station had wonderful dancing, upbeat and intriguing music, with a great show, аnd a unique, attractive music style (as opposed to most LA stations that are covered under the same standard, boring music format); no wonder 103.1 had become a favorite station of many Angelinos in no-time! KDL was perhaps the only radio-station that I personally could listen to, throughout the entire day. Finally, being a musician myself, I take music very closely and seriously, and I seriously think that KDL was one of the very few good radio stations in Los Angeles, and definitely needs to be returned.

As I am aware, the contract with Indie expires in December 2005. So, it would be a perfect time to consider, once again, implementing something new, something attractive on the LA radio waves. Along with thousands of other listeners, I kindly ask you to return 103.1 radio station back to the dance / trance style, and bring our dear KDL (or a similar music) back. Thank you very much for your consideration.

Yours truly,

Alexander Friedman

“KDL has been bought out by Clear Channel because they viewed it as a threat to KIIS 102.7. TO COMPLAIN, CONTACT CLEAR CHANNEL AT: lisacdollinger@clearchannel.com. They are suppose to change the format to alt rock from what I understand by next week. This is why there are no DJs at the moment.
For alternatives, check out web based stations like Energy 98 WHICH PLAYS ALL OF KDL SONGS ON THE WEB at www.energy98stl.com.”

Its been 2 years. LA needs a party station. Oh, and that web site does play most, maybe all, of KDL's songs.

Please Help me!!!

Posted by: zareena at January 17, 2005 07:14 PM

Oh KDL where have you gone?

I was so happy to hear that dance/techno station had return to LA airwaves. Even though I lived in Ventura County the minute, despite a very weak signal, whenever I was remotly in range I would hit my button to 103.1 KDL! While some have complained that the station was too narrow in its playlist I will say that those songs were great! It made me listen more not less...

If it was not for KDL I never would have heard the song "Nothing But You" by Paul Van Dyk let alone bought his reflections albumn.

While I had a dance channel off DirectTV I felt that KDL delivered a better variety of dance music..often I noticed that they were ahead of the DirecTV truly cutting edge!

Then came December 2003.

I began noticing that alot of crappy grunge music was being played. In fact they seemed to play the same "indie" alternatives bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mud Honey et. al.) over and over again. To add the final insult they kept on playing that damn Adam Sandler song...

I was perplexed, shocked, and a bit angry. (I HATE grunge and think Kurt cobain a shitty artist.) Was this a temporary change? Would the great dance music return?

Then , out of my radio, came my answer:

"Channel 103.1 your independant rock station."

What the FUCK?!

First off this "I'm alternative and I'm independant, free from corporate control..." is 100% total bullshit.

Second there are very few stand alone independant radio stations in the US. Let lone ones in major markets like LA.

Third this sounds like the work of Clear Channel programming executives worried that thier several hours of thump radio on KBIG 104 was getting its ass kicked.

I mean lets face it people before dec 2003 we were listening to thump...When we found KDL we saw thump wasnt all that great.

As much as I want to hate Clear Channel I really cant. I mean there are alot of issues involved here:

1. KDL HAD SIGNAL PROBLEMS:

Lets not kid ourselves. If you went to the valley, inland empire, even on the westside, You had trouble picking up the signal. Worse off large areas of O.C. couldnt even get it. Geography prevented even eastern areas of Ventura County (where I lived) from picking it up.

Yes programming is important but you need to be able to hear the programming. If you cant even get the station or it fades out in highly populated areas its really tough to attract advertisers.

2. THE STATION WAS MARKETED POORLY

I found KDL by accident. It was Dec. 2002 I was a little bit nostalgic for Groove 103.1, I decided to tune into the frequency to hear what crappy music they were playing and to lamet the loss of great radio. However I heard DANCE MUSIC (2 Unlimited get ready for this)...I was stunned...it couldnt be could it?

Then came my answer:

"Playing then-thousand songs in a row. 103.1
K-D-L. Your new party station!"

YES!!!!!!!!!!!

I was hooked.

There was just one problem. I saw no promotion for the station. No billboards, no flyers, not even the mention of a website. It wasnt untill mid-spring 2003 that they began to have DJ's and a website.

Now if you dont promote people wont know your there. If people do not you are there they wont be listening. I'm sure most of came across the KDL by accident like I did. While thats cool it makes it tough to land advertisers. If people dont know your there advertisers will not buy time (I mean after all why buy time on a station that no one knows about).

3. IT TAKES TWO TO TANG0

As I stated before I want to hate Clear Channel but I cant on this. While Clear Channel made a offer to Entravsion it was Entravison that took it. I agree with those that feel KDL was taking listerns away from KIIS, KBIG, and Star 98.7 and made a offer to stop them. It was Entravison that took the offer. I mean Entravsion knew that they were building audience (desipte the problems I've stated) yet they took easy money from CC.

That doenst make CC bad (If I could get one of my competors to agree to these terms hell I'd make the same offer)...but it should make us question Entravison's role here as well.

Havent you noticed how KBIG 104 has cut back thump radio (recently replacing it on sunday nights with Angels in Wating. WTF?) and pushing it later in the evening. Even some of the thump radio music has become kinda of slow as well.

I hope somebody would relauch a KDL-type station here in LA. Hell i'd be happy if CC did it. With a decent signal and a minimal marketing strategy I think it could work.

Alas I can only hope.

It's nice to know I was not the only one listening to KDL and was upset by its loss.

Well folks Clear Channel has lost control over 103.1 KDL!!!!! That is what the LA Times is saying:

----------

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-indie24feb24,1,2766201.story?coll=la-headlines-business&ctrack=3&cset=true

The future of Indie 103.1 FM, hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as "America's coolest commercial station," may be in jeopardy because a shift in federal regulations will force Clear Channel Communications Inc. to abandon its business partnership with the station's owner.

Indie 103.1 is owned by Entravision Communications Corp., a Santa Monica-based Spanish-language media company. But it went on the air 14 months ago under a so-called joint sales agreement with Clear Channel, the largest radio station operator in the U.S. and the owner of eight stations in the L.A. market.

Roy Laughlin, Clear Channel's regional vice president in Los Angeles, said the company would walk away from the partnership April 1.

---------

If you want our party station back then we got to let entravsion know that we want it back.

The KDL we all loved is not coming back. Entravision says the indie station is not going anywhere and that KDL lost a lot of money. Hopefully some day another radio station will come on in Los Angeles. I miss hearing a music on the FM radio different from the rest. Someway somehow a new station must get started at a different frequency. We should study how KDL went down and learn from it so the FM radio isn't so monotonous anymore. E mail your ideas to me, whatever. If something happens once, it can happen again. Hopefully the situation with KDL is the same.

Posted by: GILA MONSTER at April 8, 2005 04:53 PM

A few weeks ago, I got a phone call from a "radio station" doing a market survey on what listeners listen to and the stations in the LA area. They didnt identify themselves as a certain radio station, but at the conclusion of the 25 min survey, it was clear that this was KIIS FM, KROQ FM, KOST FM or to put it plainly, Clear Channel that was doing this survey. NOT ONCE during the survey did they play "sound clips" of ANY dance music, such as the old KDL's format. Sound clips of rock, rap, top 40, R &B and easy listening were played in a series of 4 songs each representing a "radio station". I gave each one a "low score" meaning I wouldnt listen to it. (high score meaning i would listen). Again, NOT ONCE did i hear sound clips of KDL's dance format. When I told the interviewer I dont listen to Corporate Bland Radio, she was "shocked" to know i didnt listen to any of the above mentioned formats or the radio stations that play them. Then i told her I liked DANCE music such as KDL 103.1 and listen to satellite, internet and cable dance radio. To show my BIG support for dance/electronica fans everwhere, I told her I wouldnt listen to any Corporate radio station until KDL or some other DANCE radio comes back on the air in the Los Angeles area. If I didnt know better, Clear Channel does not want a DANCE genre radio station, why? Los Angeles CA ranks #2 on the diversity scale and people have been DANCING for century's. KDL was doing VERY well, is Clear Channel conservative, discriminatory and wont support this format? Howard Stern had to leave them because of this?. I recently saw an article in the LA Times that said Corporate radio is LOSING market share to the internet and satellite radio business, so maybe if we ALL get our dance/club music from these sources, Corporate radio will have to listen to its listeners and give us what we want. I have my internet and my CD's, and now to FIGHT THOSE DIRTY BASTARDS, I have created my OWN web radio dance station! And so could you!

Go to; http://www.live365.com/stations/m4circuit

Downloading the 365live player is FREE and recommended over WMP or Real Player.

Enjoy your dancing and lets hope the old cronies at Corporate get the message!

"you broke my heart, you ran away... what I'd do, without you".... "lalalalalala la la la"

it's a female singer, she kinda sounds like crystal waters (but it isn't)

Hi everybody. There used to be a song that goes like "im a little pollo" or something like that. It repeats it again and again the same beat and saying. If anybody has it or knows it PLEASE tell me. Thank you all very much for your time! =)

Well...I have a hard one for you guys. I am looking for the name and artist of a song that came out in the early nineties. Its a song that of which I remember few lyrics but its been years since I have even heard the song. It has a few parts where the main singer breaks and what sounds like an african guy saying "awalo holiday" "Aye this is the day" and then the guy will come back to the regular chorus which has him going "do do do do do do do" "do do do do do do do" somebody please help me!!
